Action Education is an international solidarity organization for development through education. Action Education is present in 19 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. Through nearly 80 projects, Action Education and its partners contribute to improving access to and quality of education worldwide. The NGO works for a world where dignity is guaranteed for all, thanks to education, the lever for human development.
Project supported : setting up a school canteen for the Tilbonindouo school in Côte d’Ivoire.
After a first project launched in 2018 in Burkina Faso and co-financed by the Orange Foundation, the Bel and Orange Foundations have decided to support, this year, Action Education in the Ivory Coast: the aim of this new project is to offer better living conditions, to the inhabitants of the village of Tilbonindouo. The Bel Foundation’s support will enable the school’s pupils to have access to quality food, by setting up a school canteen, a vegetable garden and training in market gardening techniques.
This project benefits 150 pupils.

Created in 2013, AsaParisMada is a French association dedicated to ensuring the reintegration of the homeless in Madagascar. The association works in support of the actions implemented by the Malagasy association ASA. For more than 20 years, ASA has helped nearly 7,000 people, has created for them 28 villages and inaugurated 7 schools (2,000 children), a rural trades centre and 3 clinics.
Supported project: construction of a school canteen within the school in the village of Antanambao, Madagascar.
This project aims to offer a varied and balanced meal every day to each of the 191 children, aged 6 to 14.
Located in the Bongolava region, in the Highlands of Western Madagascar, the school of Antanambao’s village is managed by the Malagasy association ASA and has no school canteen building due to lack of funding. Every day meals are served to children in the classrooms by volunteer families.
The Foundation’s support has enabled the construction of a fitted kitchen and eating area, the extension of the vegetable garden and the planting of an orchard. These facilities have enabled the managed school to provide improved conditions for the preparation and distribution of meals to children.

Founded in 2002, Hand in Hand India is an Indian association dedicated to improving children’s education and employment among young people, thereby combatting child labour in India in a sustainable manner. In February 2019, Hand in Hand India received an award from the Indian government for its work in the fight against child labour, which has helped to provide over 300,000 children with access to state schools. The association currently operates in 16 Indian states and aims to create 5 million jobs by 2020 (3 million jobs have already been created).
Supported project: construction of a school canteen, benefiting Basavanali Primary School in Bangalore, India.
By providing a healthy and balanced meal for each of the 350 children aged 6 to 14, this project is promoting education in Bangalore and combatting child labour in a sustainable way.
As part of its school programme to combat child labour (“ the Child Labor Elimination Program “), the association made a diagnosis within Basavanali school and found that the conditions for storing, preparing and eating meals were inadequate to provide a healthy and balanced meal to each child. The dedicated spaces were too small and unsanitary.
The Foundation’s support is addressing the problem by building a spacious and safe building, consisting of a storage area and an eating area. Covering a total area of 100 square metres, this space makes it possible to prepare and distribute a meal to each student every day in decent hygienic conditions.

Created in 2010, Un Nom Un Toit Une Vie is a French association tasked with helping the deprived populations of Burkina Faso and implementing actions to protect the environment. In 2013, a private primary school (“Nelson Mandela”) was built by the association in Burkina Faso. Thanks to the sponsorship and assistance of the Ministry of Education of Burkina Faso, it now allows 330 students to attend lessons every day.
Supported project: construction of a canteen benefiting Nelson Mandela school, located in Bobo-Dioulasso in the western region of Burkina Faso.
The objective is to provide each of the 330 students (aged 3 to 10) with four balanced meals every week and to improve their nutritional status.
The Nelson Mandela School was created in one of the most underprivileged districts of Bobo-Dioulasso. Since its creation, the school has been undergoing rapid development. In 2019, three additional nursery school classrooms have been under construction.
The Foundation’s support has enabled the association to set up a furnished room within the school to prepare meals in good conditions.

Created in 2007, the Restaurants Sans Frontières association strives to provide financial support to local associations for the construction of fitted school canteens (consisting of a kitchen, a storage area and an eating area), and the creation of structures to manage resources sustainably (access to water, market gardening and food crops). Since its inception, 45 projects have been funded and implemented in 16 countries throughout Africa and Asia.
Supported project: construction of a canteen, benefiting the school in the village of Loanga, located in the central-eastern region of Burkina Faso.
The objective is to increase school enrolment in the Loanga region and ensure a balanced and healthy meal every day for each of the 450 children, aged 7 to 13.
A partner of Restaurants Sans Frontières, the Loanga Development Association has been involved in a sustainable food project for two schools in Loanga since 2017. In 2018, one of the schools was equipped with a canteen, a vegetable garden and a solar pump.
In 2019, the Foundation’s grant will enable Restaurants Sans Frontières and the Loanga Development Association to equip the second school with facilities as well as a 98-square-metre building, consisting of a kitchen, storage area and eating area. Involving and raising awareness among mothers is crucial to the project as it allows balanced meals to be prepared for each student while ensuring the long-term viability of the school canteen.

Created in 1958, Enfants du Mékong’s mission is to support, educate, train and find employment for young people in Southeast Asia. In 60 years, more than 220,000 children have been sponsored and 600,000 children have benefited from improved learning conditions through the construction of schools.
Supported project: refurbishment of the kitchen at the Ban Phonxay nursery school in the eastern region of Paksane, Laos.
The objective is to improve the general reception conditions for the 80 students aged 3 to 5, and to provide two daily meals for each one of them.
Opened in 1997, the Ban Phonxay nursery school was severely damaged by inclement weather conditions. The roofs of the four classrooms, the kitchen and the eating area required complete refurbishment in 2019 to improve learning conditions.
Through the Foundation some of the buildings can be refurbished and a school canteen built, equipped with a kitchen and a catering area.

Created in 2011, the Île aux enfants community school strives to improve the schooling and health conditions of Malagasy children in a slum in the capital.
Supported project: construction of a new school catering building within the school, located in Tananarive, Madagascar.
The objective is to increase the school’s capacity, while providing a balanced daily meal to each of the 295 children aged 4 to 14, and to expand learning opportunities for older children.
Since 2012, the Bel Foundation has provided its support on several occasions to underpin the school’s development; in 2011, 56 students attended the school. In 2019, nearly 300 students are enrolled there from nursery to high school.
The school is at full capacity but the grant has allowed it to reorganise and build a new building to increase the number of seats and meals distributed in the canteen.
The project also includes the planting of a vegetable garden and an aquaponics system to provide a balanced daily meal for all children, as well as the launch of a culinary vocational training programme for around 15 students.

The French association Racines d’Enfance is dedicated to supporting the schooling and health of children in Senegal. Working exclusively in rural areas in close collaboration with local authorities, it has built ten nursery schools since 2004.
These pre-school facilities, which are very rare in rural areas, provide a safe environment for children aged 2 to 7 to assist them in their first steps towards school.
Since 2014, the association has developed specific activities around school canteens in each of these schools, offering a balanced lunch to children every day.
Supported project: strengthening the school canteen system in five nursery schools in Senegal.
The project must allow them to become self-sufficient, in particular by setting up school gardens that provide each of the 500 children with a balanced meal every day.
The Foundation’s support has made it possible to build the entire Sobeme school canteen. This involves the building of a fitted kitchen, as well as a food storage shop and a courtyard used as an eating area. A vegetable garden for supplies is being set up.
The Ndoss, Diagane Barka, Kumbal and Keur Assan nursery schools are also benefiting from the Foundation’s support.
Through the grant it has been possible to build and equip four playgrounds for the children and improve their comfort during lunch time. Meals will be served and eaten in a semi-covered eating area. Click here to know more about the Sobeme school.

Created 150 years ago, Saint Martial college is a reputed school in Port‑au-Prince, Haiti. Over 1,700 students attend it, from nursery to high school. The earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 almost completely destroyed it.
As part of a major reconstruction project, in 2015 the Foundation helped to refurbish the eating area and kitchen of the primary section. Through a low monthly subscription fee, around 100 children now enjoy a hot and balanced meal every day in a brand new building.
Supported project: construction of an extension to the eating area of Saint Martial college in Haiti.
The objective is to double the canteen’s capacity to provide one meal for each of the 350 students every day.
In order to meet increased demand, the college wishes to build a new eating area with anti-earthquake standards in the schoolyard. With the support of the Foundation, this construction project will increase the number of meals served every day in the canteen, from 100 to 350 meals served for primary school children aged 6 to 13. Priority will be given to registering the most vulnerable families.

Providing access to education for children in villages in the far south of Madagascar is the mission of ABC Domino, a French association created in 2004.
Composed only by volunteers, the association has built and managed for fifteen years six public primary schools as well as two middle schools and a high school. 3,200 students are taught and managed by a team of 90 salaried Malagasy teachers.
For the six primary schools, only four currently have a school canteen, whose the providing is managed by WFP.
Supported project: construction of two school canteens for the two primary schools in Beheloka and Andranotohoky, in the Tulear region of Madagascar.
The objective is to provide a healthy and balanced daily meal for each of the 550 children in these two schools.
The Foundation’s support for this project is enabling the construction of two 130 m2 canteens each, comprising an eating area, a kitchen and a secure storage room. Particular attention will be paid to the materials used to cope with the cyclones in the region.
The project also includes the local manufacture of furniture necessary for the running of the canteen as well as the supply of kitchen equipment.
The preparation and distribution of meals is planned by volunteer mothers who will also oversee the maintenance of the premises.

Preventing, educating and raising awareness of good nutritional practices among vulnerable populations: such is the mission of the association Bien-Etre Sante Nutrition, B’SaN. For several years now, it has been working in Madagascar to combat child malnutrition by setting up school canteens.
The association has already set up two projects of school canteens in rural areas and wishes to continue its activities, in search of a fully self-sufficient canteen template that addresses three issues: the provision of a structure for a canteen, improved nutrition and local development.
In 2017, the support of the Bel Foundation made it possible to set up the second canteen. The Foundation wished to renew its support and allow the association to duplicate its activities while having a greater impact.
Supported project: setting up a third school canteen, in partnership with local farmers at the primary school in the village of Imerimandroso, in the Tamatave region of Madagascar.
The objective is to offer two to three balanced meals per week for each of the 80 students, aged 6 to 10.
The grant has enabled the construction of a courtyard composed by tables and benches to distribute children’s meals in a clean and protected place, an adjoining kitchen shelter equipped with an ecological cooking system, as well as the utensils necessary for preparing meals and serving sit-down meals.
But beyond the construction of these facilities, the aim is also to establish structured coordination around the canteen between the school, families and local farmers. This should bring about the desired autonomy of supply, and thus ensure the sustainability of the project.

La Tablée des Chefs is a French association of chefs and kitchen professional. Since 2013 in France, the association is developing two initiatives: feeding and educating. Its mission is to feed families in need while tackling food waste and the food insecurity and to develop culinary education of the future generations, driving them to the food autonomy. La Tablée des Chefs have been acting in Canada since 2002, in France and Mexico since 2013.

It is this aspect that the Foundation intends to support for the 2019/2020 school year.
Supported project: extension of the “culinary squads” programme to three new high-priority (REP) colleges in France.
By operating in three new colleges in 2019/2020, the association aims to reach 200 students aged 11 to 15, whom these culinary training workshops will benefit.
These “culinary squads” are a turnkey culinary workshop programme. Ten workshops are organised each year per school, led by volunteer chefs. On a voluntary basis, 12 to 25 young people meet for two hours in the school eating area, under the supervision of a volunteer professional leader. Each workshop is dedicated to a theme, which is presented in a theoretical way and then put into practice by the students, accompanied by the head teacher. These “culinary squads” are the chance for discovery, communication and sharing, and for young people to learn the principles of a healthy and balanced diet.

The Harena Manasoa France association supports the activities of the Malagasy association Harena Manasoa, which has been working for over 20 years on sustainable economic and social development projects in Madagascar.
In 2017, the French association decided to focus its efforts on setting up self-sufficient school canteens to increase school attended among children, improve their learning conditions but also introduce the population to agro-ecological practices. This has involved the launch of the ECO-CANTINE project, which aims to set up 10 canteens for the 2,500 pupils in Andramasina municipality’s 10 primary schools by 2021.
Two canteens have already been built, and in 2018 the association signed an agreement with the Malagasy Ministry of National Education that encourages the development of “green schools” and acknowledges its actions.
Supported project: deployment of the ECO-CANTINE project and construction of a school canteen for the two new public primary schools in Andramasina, Madagascar.
The objective is to provide at least two balanced meals per week to each of the 500 students, aged 4 to 15.
The Foundation’s support has made it possible to set up a canteen shelter to provide children with a sheltered space, albeit modest but more comfortable for them to eat. The grant has also made it possible to set up a vegetable garden, a henhouse, a well, a pump and a cistern for which the students, parents and teachers are responsible. This is obviously the heart of the project and guarantees its sustainability. The association works with all stakeholders to transmit efficient and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. It supports the empowerment of the entire village community by signing a charter of commitment with it.

Created in 1990, the French association Un Enfant par la Main aims to sponsor disadvantaged children throughout the world, while implementing solutions and development projects for their communities in collaboration with local partners.
Un Enfant par la Main runs development programmes in 18 countries in Africa, the Americas and Asia, benefiting nearly 150,000 children. Un Enfant par la Main is part of the international network ChildFund Alliance, like ChildFund Vietnam with which it has implemented some thirty projects.
For the project at hand, the association launched an online invitation for donations in 2019, raising more than €21,000 for the school’s development.
Supported project: construction of a school canteen, benefiting the nursery school in Quoc Toan on Vietnam’s northern border.
This project aims to increase the school enrolment rate in the region and to provide at least one healthy and balanced meal to each of the 121 children, aged 2 to 5.
Quoc Tuan school has benefited from several improvements in recent years to cope with its development: four classrooms were built between 2006 and 2010 and a covered playground was built in 2018.
The school canteen represents the school’s latest development focus, to improve the school environment in a sustainable way. Since its creation, the unsanitary state of the existing kitchen has forced teachers to prepare basic meals with little nutritional value, or even travel to a nearby school by motorcycle to get the meals. In addition, drop-out rates among schoolchildren in the region is on the rise, as their parents refuse to pay for poor school meals, and children no longer go to school.
The Foundation’s support has allowed funding to go the construction and the equipment of a 42‑square-metre fitted school canteen while training village community members and teachers to manage it. This project is therefore helping to provide a sustainable solution for the region’s children to return to school, by making the canteen self-sufficient.

DE.F.I., a French NGO set up in 1989, originally set out to support rural development in Madagascar. In 1999, the association committed itself to improving the quality of education in Madagascar and specialised in training primary school teachers, in particular by contextualising the French active teaching method “La Main A La Pâte” for teaching science. In 20 years, DEFI has trained more than 15,000 teachers. Very quickly, the association decided to make a commitment to improving school conditions too, by seeking to improve well-being at school, by improving access to water, sanitation and food for pupils. The challenges are immense: 50% of Malagasy people live in extreme poverty. And only 66% of children complete primary school. The Mandriankeniheny school is located in a remote rural area south of the Malagasy capital. After improving access to water and sanitation at the school by installing a new well and building latrines, the NGO DEFI wanted to consolidate the school by building a canteen.

The aim of this project is to improve the well-being and learning conditions of 342 children aged between 4 and 14. By setting up dedicated facilities for the preparation and distribution of meals, the Foundation hopes to help improve the children’s nutrition and encourage them to go to school.
In concrete terms, the Foundation’s support is enabling the construction of a sheltered school canteen, a sheltered kitchen equipped with an improved cooking hob, and the installation of vegetable gardens tended by parents and pupils. The Foundation’s support has also enabled teachers, parents and pupils to be trained and made aware of the need for better nutrition using the Nutricartes® method created by the L’Appel, and the school committee and canteen staff to be trained in how to manage the canteen properly (how to stock a canteen, what meals to prepare, etc.).

Founded in 2013, Eau de Coco is a French association whose mission is to improve the quality of life of marginalised people, focusing its actions on education and the fight against child labour, health and the environment. For the past two years, through the Bel Avenir programme, Eau de Coco has been distributing Moringa leaf powder in canteens in the Tuléar region of southern Madagascar. Families in this region live in extreme poverty. Without a varied and balanced diet, they often suffer from numerous deficiencies, particularly young children.
Project supported: Moringa supplementation of meals distributed in five school canteens in Tuléar, Madagascar.
The aim of this project is to combat deficiencies and improve the nutrition of 555 children aged between 6 and 13 over the long term.
By supporting the development and sustainability of the moringa industry, the Foundation aims to help improve the nutritional status of children. Rich in iron and protein, moringa is considered an excellent nutritional supplement.
In practical terms, the Foundation’s support enables the organisation of planting, training in the production and processing of Moringa with local producers, the dissemination of best practice for its distribution in school canteens and the organisation of workshops to share experiences. The Foundation is also helping to equip school canteens, offer new recipes enriched with Moringa and raise awareness among parents and children of the benefits of Moringa.
Eau de Coco works in partnership with the social enterprise KINOME , which has extensive knowledge of the Moringa sector in Africa, particularly production and processing techniques.

Nébébay is a Senegalese environmental protection association working for participatory and sustainable management and greater use of the country’s natural resources. Its work focuses on setting up professional sectors and developing income-generating activities for women, as well as educating children and raising their awareness of environmental protection issues and reforestation. In particular, Nébéday is working to promote the Moringa plant, considered to be the “tree of life” and renowned for its high nutritional value thanks to its iron and protein content. The association operates in the Saloum delta region, which is regularly affected by drought and salinisation of the soil, and where almost 20% of children under the age of 5 are malnourished.
Project supported: Moringa supplementation in meals distributed in a pilot school canteen in the Saloum delta, Senegal.
The aim of this project is to improve the nutrition of around a hundred schoolchildren over the long term by developing the Moringa sector.
In practical terms, the Foundation’s support is helping to create jobs and organise training for women’s groups to produce, process and distribute Moringa. The Foundation is also helping to create new recipes adapted to and enriched with Moringa, and to raise awareness among schoolchildren of the need for a better diet.

AVSF has been active for over 40 years in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, helping the most vulnerable farming families to develop agricultural and livestock activities, in order to combat food insecurity in the long term. For several years now, the NGO has been particularly active in the department of Vélingara, one of the poorest regions in Senegal.
Project supported: supply of local dairy products to two pilot school canteens in the Velingara department in southern Senegal.
The aim of this project is to provide access to healthy, balanced food in schools for 178 children aged between 6 and 14, thereby improving their learning conditions.
By supporting the development of the dairy industry, the Foundation hopes to contribute to the region’s economic development in 2020 and thus help improve the living conditions of the region’s inhabitants and children.
In practical terms, the Foundation’s support will help to organise milk collection and supply for school canteens, as well as training for dairy producers and processors in good hygiene practices, processing and the possibilities for diversifying dairy products. By providing pupils with rich, balanced meals, the Foundation hopes to help reduce the rate of absenteeism from school.
This project is a continuation of the programme to strengthen the dairy industry, which began in 2016 and was supported in 2017 by the Bel Foundation.

Over the past 60 years, more than 220,000 children have been sponsored and 600,000 children have benefited from better learning conditions, thanks to the construction of schools, wells, bridges, homes, etc. Rural and mountainous, Laos suffers from a major lack of infrastructure and resources to develop its education system. Built in 2011 by Enfants du Mékong, the only nursery and primary school in the small, remote village of Nasavanh, on the border with Thailand, is in need of major renovation.

The aim of this project is to offer a varied and balanced meal every day to each of the 80 pupils, aged between 3 and 10.
By equipping the school with a kitchen and refectory, the Foundation’s support is making the school more attractive to poor families who live far away, and helping to combat absenteeism and school drop-out.
