Founded in 2000, Andès (National Association for the Development of Solidarity Grocery Stores) is one of France’s leading food aid networks: today, the association brings together over 600 solidarity grocery stores, providing participatory food aid and social support to the thousands of grocery store beneficiaries.
Given the growing needs of the most disadvantaged sections of the population, Andès’ aim is to significantly expand the network of solidarity grocery stores. In 2021, Andès was the winner of France Relance, a key support mechanism enabling it to plan the creation of 300 new structures across France.
Community grocery stores are important local hubs in the fight against food insecurity, while also promoting access to fresh, quality produce for isolated or low-income populations. In these grocery stores, Andès also aims to raise awareness among beneficiaries of the importance of a healthier diet. Through the inclusion and participation of families, Andès also helps to develop and strengthen each family’s self-esteem.
In 2021, the Foundation supported the creation of five new community grocery stores and enabled the organisation of educational visits for the children of beneficiary families to reconnect with the origin of their food. “Out on the farm” days were organised for the children, giving them the chance to meet new people, discover a new environment and enjoy some respite with their families from their often complicated daily lives.
In 2023, the Bel Foundation’s support will enable more grocery stores to offer these farm visits to beneficiary families, while giving them the means to adopt new consumption practices in the long term.
What are the expected results?
– Roll-out an internal call for applications to the Andès network
– 25 selected community grocery stores organise educational visits with local producers
– The visits will reach around 225 children and 190 adults
– The visits help to forge lasting connections, particularly regarding the supply of sustainable products to solidarity grocery stores
