Essentiel is an association founded in 1992 whose mission is to promote health in nine sub-Saharan African countries and in France through education in citizenship and solidarity in the field of health. 

The association has launched a multi-year project in Senegal in the Rufisque region, south of Dakar. Its aim is to support the development of a network of local players with a shared drive to promote children’s health. The project includes a focus on child nutrition, with a pre-school community canteen initiative, experience-sharing on nutritional activities and food-related income-generating activities. 

In 2023, the Bel Foundation’s support will enable the association to develop this programme by setting up nutrition-related activities and supplementing the children’s canteen meals with a vegetable garden. 

The expected results are: 

• A balanced and varied meal served to each child every day 
• Train 30 community stakeholders to maintain and set up new income-generating activities, including a pre-school community canteen initiative 
• Raise awareness among children and their families of good eating habits through micro-gardening and hygiene 

A total of over 260 pupils aged 2 to 6 will have access to one healthy and balanced meal per day.
