ABC Domino

2023

Founded over 15 years ago at the initiative of the European Homes Group, the French association ABC Domino works in Madagascar to improve the living conditions of the Madagascan population and facilitate their access to education. Based in the bush in the Grand Sud region, the association has built and manages six primary schools, two middle schools and one secondary school. Thanks to its work, around 3,700 pupils are now in school, taught by a team of 110 Madagascan teachers.

The association’s aim is to provide young Madagascans with a quality education in suitable, safe premises, so that they can attend school from primary school right through to baccalaureate.

The Bel Foundation has supported ABC Domino three times previously, initially to build a primary school canteen (2019), then to help create an initial nursery and an orchard next to the secondary school set up by the association to promote food diversification in the association’s various canteens (2020).  In 2021, the Foundation’s support made it possible to finance another nursery and orchard to supply two other primary schools.

The Bel Foundation’s support in 2023 will provide the means to teach market gardening practices at the primary school to improve and diversify the meals served in the canteen.

The expected results of this project are:

A total of 365 pupils will have access to a variety of meals in the canteen.

Acting For Life

2023

Founded in 1973, the NGO Acting for Life works towards the economic and social development of vulnerable populations in specific territories. For nearly 50 years, it has pursued a single goal: to combat poverty and enable children, women and men to live with dignity, thanks to the help of more than 50 local partners in West Africa and Latin America.

Operating in Burkina Faso since 2015, Acting for Life has made the transformation of food systems towards sustainable and resilient models a major priority. Since 2021, the NGO has set up the TERSAA (Transition of Agricultural and Food Systems in Local Areas) programme in five countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Colombia, Peru and Togo), the aim of which is to promote sustainable food production and guarantee the availability and access of consumers to locally produced quality food.

In 2022, the Bel Foundation’s support provided the means to improve the food offered in 30 schools in Burkina Faso.

In 2023, the Bel Foundation will continue to support this programme and will help to support and train producers from 12 cooperatives in Burkina Faso, and improve agricultural yields and distribution outlets, with the aim of serving a meal a day to beneficiary schoolchildren.

What are the project’s expected results?

A total of 2,400 pupils in 30 primary schools will have access to a meal a day at school. Find more information on the TERSAA programme here.

Andès

2023

Founded in 2000, Andès(National Association for the Development of Solidarity Grocery Stores) is one of France’s leading food aid networks: today, the association brings together over 600 solidarity grocery stores, providing participatory food aid and social support to the thousands of grocery store beneficiaries.

Given the growing needs of the most disadvantaged sections of the population, Andès’ aim is to significantly expand the network of solidarity grocery stores. In 2021, Andès was the winner of France Relance, a key support mechanism enabling it to plan the creation of 300 new structures across France.

Community grocery stores are important local hubs in the fight against food insecurity, while also promoting access to fresh, quality produce for isolated or low-income populations. In these grocery stores, Andès also aims to raise awareness among beneficiaries of the importance of a healthier diet. Through the inclusion and participation of families, Andès also helps to develop and strengthen each family’s self-esteem.

In 2021, the Foundation supported the creation of five new community grocery stores and enabled the organisation of educational visits for the children of beneficiary families to reconnect with the origin of their food. “Out on the farm” days were organised for the children, giving them the chance to meet new people, discover a new environment and enjoy some respite with their families from their often complicated daily lives.

In 2023, the Bel Foundation’s support will enable more grocery stores to offer these farm visits to beneficiary families, while giving them the means to adopt new consumption practices in the long term.

What are the expected results?

 – Roll-out an internal call for applications to the Andès network

– 25 selected community grocery stores organise educational visits with local producers

– The visits will reach around 225 children and 190 adults

– The visits help to forge lasting connections, particularly regarding the supply of sustainable products to solidarity grocery stores

Asa Paris Mada

2023

Founded in 2013, AsaParisMada is a French association whose mission is to promote the reintegration of the homeless in Madagascar. The association works in support of actions implemented by the Madagascan association A.S.A.: over the last 20 years, the ASA association has helped nearly 7,000 people, created 28 villages and opened seven schools (2,000 children), one rural skills centre and three dispensaries.

The association’s mission is to provide moral, material and financial support to the people of Madagascar. It operates in several areas: social, educational, health and economic.

In 2019, the Bel Foundation’s support enabled the school run by the association to build and equip the canteen and extend its vegetable garden. These facilities will enable the school to provide better conditions for preparing and serving meals to the children.

In 2023, the project supported by the Bel Foundation will ensure the sustainability and empowerment of school canteens in a migration zone where the association has been operating for several years.

What are the project’s expected results?

A total of 600 pupils will have access to a more complete diet.

AVSF

2023

Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières (AVSF) is an NGO that for the last 40 years has been helping the most vulnerable farming families to develop their agricultural and livestock activities, in order to combat food insecurity in the long term. Every year, AVSF runs around 60 cooperation programmes in some 20 countries in Africa, Asia, Central and South America and the Caribbean. In Africa, the NGO has been active for several years in Vélingara Department, one of the poorest regions in Senegal.

Since 2016, the Bel Foundation has supported AVSF on several occasions in this region to help relocate milk production while combating malnutrition in local communities. The Foundation’s long-standing support for AVSF’s work has made it possible to strengthen networks of cooperative mini-dairies, including through the “Milk for Kids” project. This has enabled local dairy products to be supplied to the region’s school canteens, improving pupils’ nutrition. By bolstering the production, processing and sales capacities of the Senegalese milk sector, AVSF has also enabled many families to increase their income and thus improve their living conditions in the long term.

The Bel Foundation’s support in 2023 will enable the “Milk for Kids” project to be rolled out to new canteens.

What are the project’s expected results?

A total of more than 1,500 pupils aged 6 to 12 will have access to these meals.

Collectif Haïti de France

The network draws its strength from building collaborative projects to help the people of Haiti. Since its creation, the network and local players have for example helped to set up 13 educational gardens in schools to train pupils in sustainable practices and ensure the daily food security of the children.

In 2023, the Bel Foundation’s support will enable the association to develop two new educational gardens near two schools to supplement the meals served in the canteens, while also helping to reduce school absenteeism.

What are the expected results?

A total of 830 pupils will have access to a balanced meal every day.

Entrepreneurs du Monde

2023

Entrepreneurs du Monde is a French NGO that supports the social and economic integration of people in very precarious situations in Asia, Africa, Haiti and France.

The association’s main aims are to give the most disadvantaged sections of the population access to basic goods and services and to encourage them to become self-sufficient.

To achieve this, the association is focusing on four development levers: social microfinance, employment integration through entrepreneurship, access to energy and agro-entrepreneurship. The association is focusing on agriculture, which is a major challenge in the context of climate change and with a view to empowerment. The association’s teams are therefore working to build storage buildings and nurseries, as well as train local people in sustainable farming techniques.

Since it was founded, the association has helped more than 180,900 direct beneficiaries and 904,500 indirect beneficiaries, and has distributed over 28,800 lighting/cooking stove kits.

The Bel Foundation’s support in 2023 will enable the association to help combat malnutrition among children and their families in Togo by focusing on agro-ecological training for producers, with the aim of developing more nutritious crops and supplying school canteens.

What are the project’s expected results?

A total of 2,000 pupils aged 6 to 12 will have access to better nutrition.

The Gret

2023

Founded in 1976, the NGO GRETworks to combat poverty, reduce structural inequalities, promote economic and social rights and protect the environment in around 30 countries.

As a long-standing partner of the Foundation, GRET has been involved on several occasions in nutritional awareness programmes in Burkina Faso. In 2017 and 2018, the Foundation assisted the NGO in developing the “ALLOLAAFIA” programme, which uses mobile phones to inform and raise awareness among disadvantaged families about maternal and child nutrition issues.  In 2020, the Bel Foundation renewed its support for GRET to set up a pilot project to relocate milk production and supply seven school canteens in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.

In 2021, the Foundation’s support enabled GRET to roll out and adapt this programme to the Senegalese context. In this region of northern Senegal, GRET’s challenge remains the same: to improve farming families’ living conditions and incomes by bolstering the local milk sector. The Foundation’s support in 2021 enabled two mini-dairies to produce fortified thiakry, an iron-enriched local product made from milk and millet.

In 2023, the Bel Foundation is renewing its support for this programme and will help to consolidate it.

The expected results of this project are:

A total of 300 pupils aged 6 to 12 from four primary schools will have access to a balanced breakfast every day.

Les Puits du Désert

2023

For over 20 years, the association Les Puits du Désert has been working in the Agadez region in the north of Niger, a highly desertified area, where it is one of the few French associations to conduct activities in this area.

Its mission is to improve the living conditions of Tuareg communities. In this predominantly desert country, access to water is very limited and is a major daily challenge for the most disadvantaged nomadic and sedentary populations. For the children, direct access to water relieves them of the chore of fetching water, which often takes up several hours a day, thereby paving the way to school.

Since 2004, over 320 wells (pastoral, market garden or village) have been built or refurbished in the Agadez region. The association has also enabled the construction of schools, simple but “hard” buildings (concrete walls, tin roofs and ceilings) that protect the children from the harsh climate. The association is also working to set up school canteens and gardens. It is also working to empower women and give them access to basic healthcare. Working closely with its local partner, the Nigerian NGO TIDENE, Les Puits du Désert has now enabled almost 100,000 very vulnerable people to benefit from this infrastructure.

In 2020, the Bel Foundation supported an initial project to build two market garden wells and two school gardens in two primary schools in the region. In 2022, the Bel Foundation renewed its support for the association to equip two other schools with wells and vegetable gardens, in order to improve canteen supplies.

The Bel Foundation’s support in 2023 will help to improve the nutritional status and schooling of new pupils by setting up two new school gardens in Indoudou and Inghighi, Niger.

What are the project’s expected results?

A total of 270 pupils will have access to one meal per day throughout the school year.

Magic Breakfast

2023

Its aim is to help improve children’s living conditions and support them as they take their first steps towards school, so that they can integrate successfully into the primary education cycle and have a successful academic journey.

Through its work, the association also enables mothers to have free time so they can devote themselves to developing income-generating activities.

Over the last five years, the Bel Foundation has supported Racines d’Enfance in developing canteens and vegetable gardens at these nursery schools in Senegal. In 2022, the Ivorian education authorities asked the association to replicate its pre-school model in the country, as Côte d’Ivoire has very few facilities for children in this age group, with the Bel Foundation giving the association its assistance in this project.

SOS SAHEL

2023

For over 45 years, the NGO SOS SAHEL has been working to improve living conditions for people in sub-Saharan Africa. It provides support to rural communities in the Sahel to help guarantee their food security. Thanks to its expertise in the field and with the help of a network of over 1,000 partners from a variety of complementary backgrounds (agronomists, technicians, experts, sociologists, journalists, etc.), SOS SAHEL works in particular in the fields of sustainable agriculture, access to water and capacity building for local players.

For several years now, SOS SAHEL has been setting up a number of NUTRISCO Clubs, notably in Burkina Faso, Chad and Senegal. In groups, volunteer pupils come together and learn about good hygiene, nutrition and farming practices through fun, interactive exercises. The harvests from the school gardens supply the canteens with fresh fruit and vegetables. This programme, both theoretical and practical, enables the children to become genuine ambassadors for nutrition and then share their knowledge within their communities. As such, these clubs are a powerful educational tool in combating malnutrition on a large scale.

A long-standing partner, the Foundation has been working alongside SOS SAHEL since 2015 to combat child malnutrition in Burkina Faso. In 2017, 2021 and 2022, the Bel Foundation supported the NGO in developing NUTRISCO Clubs.
